That's exactly what they said to me. That it would fix the immediate issue but would likely cause stenosis at both ends of the stent. They said this is only an issue with WG patients, anyone else they'd have put in stents in my case. I will say that every Pulmy didn't 100% seem to agree with that, but they deferred to the interventional guy, so it's possible that he's over cautious too.

I'm still nervous about all of this. Maybe lazering and dilation are the way to go. Hopefully this guy has some experience with Wegs in this area.

Dean and I are happy to hear this Phil. Glad you can hear again. My husband has been thinking about getting this done too. Please start feeling better and let us know how you like your new hearing. Sounds like you are doing great on the hearing. Now to get the breathing under control. Sure will be Praying for that.

    Thank you so much.

The hearing is nothing short of a miracle and totally amazing. I think it is even better than the first day now.

So implant is something attached to your head (say the size of a silver dollar) that directly sends vibrations to one of the bones in the ear canal? If so, is are the words tinny or hollow sounding? Do you hear loud and soft sounds the same or can you tell the difference between a whisper and a yell?

Any ole way.... I'm so glad you are hearing again! :-)

Nope, not like that at all. Very complicated and complex.

The implanted portionn is just under the skin behind and above the ear. A tiny wire with 22 electrodes is fed into the cochlea. The wire is attached to the implanted device that has the magnet and chip.

On the outide the coil and magnet attach via magnetism. Then a wire goes from that to the processor that is like a behind the ear hearing aid and is worn as such.

The processor picks up the sound through 2 microphones. Then the processor decides which 8 electrodes to fire. Then it sends the signal to the coil and then it is transmitted by magnetic induction to the interior chip and then to the electrodes in the cochlea that are fired up. Then the nerve endings are stimulated and the electrical charge is sent to the auditory nerve and then to the brain for processing. And then the brain will recognized it as sound.

I still have a long way to go yet. And need to retrain the brain so to speak.

Phil, this is a terrific and fascinating description. One question: what powers the thing?

Brains are for more plastic than it was believed only a couple of decades ago. Chances are you'll become pretty good at this quite fast. This is cool indeed!

I see Dr Specks in December...but talk to him monthly...I was told by my trach specialist that stents are not good for WG since it causes more scar tissue growth around and below it then there is the problem of removing them....too bad no one has come up with a brochiloe transplant yet ...i have narrowing in both right and left bronchiloes...hope this helps...glad you can hear...missed you while you were gone batman
