Peace for the Holidays
I was going to wish y’all a Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas, but two days ago I finished the book When Breath becomes Air. The next day I watched a Rabbi speak on TV. Both times I was reminded that this may be a difficult time for many, family issues, jobs, financial, death of a loved one and of course there is Wegeners. So it is my prayer and wish for you to have peace. This one day is built up for sales, money, gifts and it shouldn’t be. If you have little ones enjoy it through their innocence. If you celebrate it religiously then lean into the prayer. If it is secular, then by all means, tell yourself you don’t have to do anything. It is unfortunate that we feel forced to give gifts or go to parties and events when we would rather be home. By all means, try to lift any self imposed pressure. Relax with some good music and think of the good things in your life.
My pleasure will be in sharing a hilarious memory with you. We know office holiday parties are just an extension of work. You show up, dress conservatively, limit your drinks to two. Well, about thirty years ago I was at an office party, think Mad Men. A lovely middle aged woman was topped out. She said to the new guy, who happened to be very handsome, ‘Boy, your area really produces some studs.’ I was eating and almost choked. One of the coworkers said ‘Do you know what you just said?’ Lady answered ‘Yes, I love studs, you know, potatoes.’ At that point people were falling on the ground and someone said ‘You mean spuds.’ Lady said ‘well, after all he is from Idaho.’ Handsome young man who was by now beet red gently responded, ‘No, I am from Iowa.’ This is a true story. I hope I brought a smile to your face and a giggle to your gut.
Be kind to yourself and be well.
