I was stuck at 2.5 mg pred for about 2 or 3 years but couldn't taper below it without my adrenals shutting down. I didn't need to be on it to control Wegs. In 2011 I started seeing an endocrinologist at JHU who switched me to hydrocortisone, which allows us to do adrenal function lab tets periodically. She said it can take a year or so for the adrenals to come back online.
The main test they do is measure the cortisol levels in the morning (called the AM Cortisol). Normal is 12-15. Last year mine was 6.5. She said my adrenals weren't working well enough yet to start tapering the HC, but they were working well enough for her to feel hopeful that they might come back fully online given more time. We just repeated the test last week and it was 9.8. It needs to be a 12 before we can start tapering, so we'll repeat it in 6 months.
For the past several months I've added a low dose of an adrenal support nutrient. I know that's what is helping, since it actually heals the adrenals. (And no, I'm not going to share the name of it. It can be VERY dangerous to take this without proper supervision by a holistic doctor)
I know I should be really excited about that 9.8 but I've been disappointed so many times in the past that I'm feeling rather cautious about celebrating. It's ridiculous, I know. The past has nothing to do with the present. But still.
