The timeout I mentioned is based on activity. That means even if you have the forum open all day on your screen, you will eventually disappear from the 'active users' list because you won't have loaded any pages for an hour. You won't see yourself disappear from the list because you'd have to load a page to do so and if you did, you'd be an active user I hope that makes sense.
