Default My Weg husband has new lung illness

This past week has been in the hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tn. Scarry! My husband had been dx'd 2 weeks ago with another flare of wegs. After reading all your posts I am now so determined to find him a weg specialist. He was put on 80 mg prednisone right away. Fevers kept getting worse. After blood tests came back showing "something", the hospital called us to get there right away. Long story short after a week of every test imaginable with every type dr, they did ct scan and lung biopsy and determined it to be blastomycosis. Has anyone ever dealt with it? It is fungal and his lungs were full of it. Treatment is itraconazole orally for several months. The kicker is he is having to come off the high dose prednisone he shouldn't have been on to begin with. Anyone dealt with this disease? Apparently it is transmitted airborne. Just one more medication to add to the list.

Yikes, Victoria. Fungal infections like that are quite serious. I hope he tolerates the meds okay and it resolves quickly.

Does this mean his Wegs is still in remission?

According to twenty plus docs at Vanderbilt, yes the wegs is still in remission. His symptoms of this blastomycosis came on just like the flares in the past, low grade fevers, hoarseness, etc. He had 3 weeks of continual blood work to rule out "stuff", so it was finally decided he was having a weg flare, put on the 80 mg prednisone, did not stop the fever. Only got higher. Finally something in blood work triggered a call to get to Vandy immediately. They thought he had a bacterial inf. in blood. That turned out to be a staff contaminate. Higher fever all week, ct scan, finally bronchoscopy and lung biopsy. The treatment for this fungal thing is itraconazole for several months or maybe a year. At least that's for right now. Who knows.

I had never heard of this before so I did a Google and it seems that it is quite common. It is lucky that we don't all get it with suppressed immune systems. The only bright point I can think of is that it seems to be easy enough to confirm the diagnosis and rule out Wegener's. Hope the meds sood bring it under control - fungal stuff can be quite difficult.

I"m glad to see you're "determined to find him a Wegs specialist." While this certainly does sound like it's "just" the fungal infection, Wegs can creep in easier when the body is stressed by infection. Now is the time to find a specialist and make sure he's under solid care.

I'm sure glad they found the fungus. Some people go for a long time with an infection like that.

Back again fellow wegs. My husband is not doing well. Running high fevers and not tolerating the med itraconazole for this lung fungus. Vandy docs are bringing us back to try and figure out what to do. I know you don't know him personally but he is battaling this on top of wegeners so please pray for him.

I will pray for him, we are all connected in this and will send prayers for your strength as well. You said Vandy docs are bringing you back, or you out of hospital now??
