Default Does NHS in UK cover for students of other countries?

    Dear Friends,
I am Nagesh, from Bangalore, India. My son Nischal, now 23years was diagnosed with ‘Wegener’s granulomatosis’ when he was 13 years old. Now he is on maintenance dose of Rituximab 500mg once in six months and prednesoline 5mg daily. He has completed his undergraduate course in Bangalore, India and he wants to do his masters in UK. So, I have been asking education consultancy to get me clarification whether NHS will cover his maintenance and in case of flare treatments in UK. They are not specifically saying whether it covers or not. I will be very much thankful if someone can give inputs in this regard.

    Thank you
    Nagesh

If he is coming from outside of Europe the following applies -
    "
    • Non-EEA students studying on courses longer than 6 months are required to pay an Immigration Health Surcharge to benefit from free NHS treatment. The surcharge is paid as part of your visa application and costs £150 per year (this also includes £150 for each dependant). For further information and to pay the fee, please visit https://www.immigration-health-surch.../payment/start

But do bear in mind that treatment does not mean medication. Rituximab is expensive and not all hospitals in the UK will use it for Wegener's. His appointment with Drs and specialists will be covered by the £150 charge above, but if the dr prescribes maintenance drugs (such as Azathioprine ) instead of Rituximab, he will have to pay for these. There is a set charge of £8.80 for each item prescribed. Most prescribed items are for a 4 week course. If you need more than one item per month, a 12 month prepayment certificate for £104 gives you unlimited prescribed items for a year.
There is schemes for low income people that entitles them to free prescriptions, but I think it's only for UK residents.
