Default Re: High calcium in urine

An update: the calcium in my urine of 24 hours collection has continued to be extremly high, now it came back 432. The norm is no more then 250.

My endocrinologist said that the high calcium in urine might be the result of being on both pred and budezon (steroids for my colitis) together.

The dr. Suggested that I will stop taking calcium pills. I take 500 or 600mg daily. He said that I might get kidneys stones as a result of this high calcium in urine.

On the other hand, I have ostheopenia and it became worse compared to the bone density test from 2 years ago. Not sure what to do about all these.

What I keep on doing is a daily walk of 30 minutes every day. I hope it can help my poor bones.

Any advices are more then welcome, especially how do you keep your bones strong.

    Hi Alysia
I heard an endocrinologist being interviewed on the radio this morning and she seemed to be discussing your issues. She was talking about the parathyroid glands which sit behind the thyroid. When they are overactive they can take too much calcium from the bones and redirect it into your blood. This can cause kidney stones, stomach pains and pains in your joints as well as decreased bone density.
Perhaps this is worth following up with your doctors. Hope you feel better soon.

I know that some of the specialists here in Melbourne are starting to reduce the useage of calcium tablets.
I no longer take them, but my sister in law who has Addisons Disease, has been told to stop taking them, and my Aunty who has cancer, has been told to stop taking them

I hope you get some answers soon, and keep up with the walking

Thank you. I wonder, if you stop taking the calcium pills how do you get enough calcium ? The endocrinologist said I need 1000mg per day. That's A LOT.
I've stopped the calcium pills for one month to check again the calcium in my urine.

I'm really not sure, because I don't eat dairy, and as you know, we (you and I) have a lot of foods in common that we cannot eat.
I do eat broccoli and I do eat cabbage, which are both sources of calcium. I really don't eat any of the others sources, like sardines etc

I do have a dexa bone density scan every two years, and so far, so good, which really surprises me because I haven't really had dairy since I was a teenager.
It's not that I have any allergies to dairy, it's just that I am not fond of milk or milk products.........except for chocolate. Maybe that's the answer
Oh and the occasional ice-cream cone - very occasional

I hope this settle down for you, very soon

Oh dear, my poor old knees certainly don't like the stairs anymore, but the entrances and exits we need to take at the train stations, there is no other option.
Well there is an option, I could take the lift, but that is on the opposite side of where I need to go.
Therefore, 5 days a week I need to go up or down, 120 steps sometimes more.

I'm not really sure as to what the answer is.

I hope you have had better blood results now
    Keep Smiling
