Question Question About High Temps & Illnesses

At what point does a high body temperature send you to the ER when you're sick? I just finished another 10-day course of antibiotics for a UTI/colonization of E.coli in my bladder, which I've had for 11 months. Also, my ENT looked deep into my sinuses about 9 days ago & said I have a fungal sinus infection. However, the medication he ordered to treat this infection were supposed to be compounded together from a compound pharmacy in a nasal mist for a nebulizer, which aren't covered by insurance. It was close to $500, which we don't have. I'm still trying to work with my ENT & insurance to cover it.

I've had a 99-100 degree fever for months, but today it's 102.4. When do you go to the ER, temp-wise, when you're sick? I took several Tylenol & am praying my temp lessens. Thanks for any advice.

@txrepub4God I'm sorry your sick. Hoping the Tylenol helps! I had a fever for a long time just before my dx of weg. It would fluctuate between 99- 102 just like you... that was even while I was on 600 mg Motrin around the clock for ear pain. A temp can be a sign of Weg gpa disease activity. If you are on multiple courses of antibiotics and you are not responding maybe it's not bacterial. Have they cultured you? All that antibiotics could predispose you to a fungal infection for sure. Have you tried 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water? It's a natural antibiotic/antifungal. Just drink it down.
Are you on meds currently for weg? Pred or ritux or something? Have they checked your inflammation markers lately? I think it sounds like you should see your rheumatologist. I think you should go to urgent care if your rheumy can't see you soon or if temp stays elevated for 2-3 days. Def touch base with your weg doc today or tomorrow tho. I'm not a medical professional tho.
    Hope you feel better soon!

You should call your Wegner's specialist, tomorrow with a tempature that high. If you can't get your fever down, go to the ER and have them confere with your Doctor. It could be that your Weg's is acting up, it is not good to guess on what to do. Don't delay getting help, because we don't always think right with a fever. I wish you all the best for getting the right treatment for what ails you.

I would assume that the ENT did a culture to find out exactly what type of antibiotic will get rid of the infection?

I got around the compounding part with my insurance. The ENT simply writes two different prescriptions for the antibiotic and the sterile saline. The antibiotic that I have to dissolve in the saline is in a tube, so it is written as "apply to nose and sinuses x times a day", and the saline says "rinse sinuses x times a day". I then get the recipe from the doc and mix it myself.

I've never used a nebulizer for my nose and sinuses; I do use a WaterPik though. I have a technique that my ENT and I have worked out that has worked wonders with the infections I get. I load the rinse in the WaterPik, put it on the slowest setting. I put the nose wand up to one nostril and hold the other one closed, and start the water flow. Once I feel the slight tickle in the back of my throat, I stop the water flow, leaving the wand in the nostril, and then let the fluid sit in there for as long as I can stand it. Make sure that the water flow stops, because of it doesn't it can flood into the eustachian tubes, and that can cause a host of other problems. This method assures that all the antibiotic gets to where it needs to be and stays there for a minute or more. I think my doses are 8 oz at a time, and I think I get about 2 to 2.5 fills with the 8 ounces.

Again, this is what my ENT and I have worked out. Please check with your doctor before trying something like this.

This method/technique really has done wonders for my nose and sinuses.

My physicians have often told me to get help or assessment when temps reach 101 but I imagine each situation varies according to medical issue and problems being experienced.
