    Default Cataracts

Had a follow eye exam yesterday and was told that I have cataracts that are probably due to the long term use of prednisone. I was on prednisone for 3 years and as of last month am no longer on any steroids. Was curious to see if any others have cataracts and if you have you had the surgery to remove them.
The bright side is if I have the surgery I won't need to wear glasses any longer after wearing them for over 30 years.
Thanks for any information from your personal experiences

My ophthalmologist has told me that cataracts are possible due to long-term pred use (have only been completely off them for three months since dx). I find myself thinking that cataract surgery wouldn't necessarily be bad if I could lose the nearsightedness and astigmatism. I'm going to try single vision soft contacts for distance vision along with reading glasses. I've tried multi focal soft contacts, but I have too much astigmatism, and so I have a bit of "ghosting" when I wear them.

    Good luck!!

I got a cataract in my right eye after about 6 months of high-dose prednisone use. My opthalmologist is keeping an eye on it and she said I would need surgery within the next 10 years.

I had cataracts in both eyes. I had them corrected last November. The surgery wasn't particularly long, but it wasn't particularly pleasant either Others may have a different opinion though, I'm pretty sensitive about things touching my eyes The only downside of the correction is loss of close up vision occurs, but they can completely correct for distance vision issues.

Thanks for the info I will probably end up with the surgery next year since the best vision I can get with my new glasses is 20/7o in 1 eye and 20/30 in the other. I was told that I would need reading glasses after

Yes...this is one of the reasons why folks refer to pred as the "devil's pills". I am scheduled for surgery in August. I have many friends who have had the surgery and said that it was very easy for them and that they were amazed at the improvement in vision. I definitely need it, as my right eye has very poor sight. Left eye is ok. I am finding it difficult to read road signs, and I find myself avoiding regular books and using my kindle app to read because I can make the print larger. This is a real handicap for a retired librarian who loves the smell of REAL books. I can tell by the smell if a book was published in England or Singapore, both of which have the same lovely fragrance. I can often detect a book published in Italy. Any book published outside the US has a distinctive smell. I know....weird and useless skill. My students used to search for books printed outside the country to test me.

What i find so strange about the whole problem with sight and prednisone is that for me, my sight gets bad when i get to a low dose of pred after being on a high dose for several months. Also, i didnt need glasses until my last round of prednisone and now this round i need a stronger prescription ...after at least 10 other tapers since being dxed 14 years ago. Wierd. I just would have thought it would have done its damage before this. But now at this rate i feel like i will be blind before too many more rounds of the wicked stuff. Such is life. It could always be worse, right!

    Hi Pete,

I was diagnosed in March had Rtx, down to 8mg medrol. My eyesight had been getting progressively worse. I had never worn glasses prior. I'm sure most of my eye dx uvietis, inflamation optic nerve all part of disease. But, i did develop astigmatism (thought I was going blind) am now wearing progressive eye glasses. You mentioned that you have astigmatism. Was this due to weg or astigmatism was prior.

Trying to figure out what causes what here.

    Thank you
    Susan

    Hi Susan,

I've had astigmatism since I was a little kid. Until I started wearing contacts, I looked at the world through "coke bottle bottoms".

I guess I will look at the bright side, I did not have to wear them until now. I don't see the ophthalmologist until January. No rush to find out why, but am curious. Specialists in this field are very good and this is routine for them. My report would have been alarming to me, but since he said come back in six months, I'll assume I shouldn't worry.

Thank you for your prompt response.
