    Default Mepron (atovaquone)

My husband was originally on Bactrim and got a rash and was taken off. He has been on Mepron (generic atovaquone) for quite some time. We have new insurance and each bottle of Mepron costs us $1,400!!! We asked the doctor if he can go back on Bactrim and just deal with the rash and the doctor said he cannot prescribe something that he knows a patient is allergic to.

Does anyone know of any other medication he could take that won't bankrupt us?

Malarone is a substitute, but not considered as effective as Mepron. Have you had your doc talk with your insurance company directly? Sometimes a 'discussion' with your insurance companies with the docs can promulgate some good things for you...gotta step up...or is that 'get up'!? Also, the drug company runs a program thru them that could reduce your costs. Best to you.

My wife is on Medicare, with a supplement, but we quickly learned about the donut hole in the drug program. It was easy to spend up to the limit with $650 copay's. She asked about this drug and it's purpose with her lung Doc and he told her that with her immune system, this would help prevent lung problems. She wanted to quit taking it and he said that it was risky but when she got off all drugs last Aug (2013) she dropped the Mepron too. She hasn't had a problem yet.
