Default What lab tests are recommended?

I am scared if I have Wegeners disease, but I do not have health insurance and cannot afford too may office visits and tests. I just found a company that does many lab tests, is there a particular test that is recommended? I heard that those with Wegeners can have kidney problems, so would a urinalysis be a good place to start, to just rule that out? Should I test for anemia too, while I am at it? I found a company online that charges $29 for lab tests and they give you the results within one day. I would obviously see a doctor if the lab work would be off the charts. Help much appreciated.

Gilder is spot on, however, diagnosis of wegs is difficult. If you had a positive c-anca, then there would be clinical cause to look further. A negative c-anca, however, wouldn't necessarily rule out the possibility of an auto-immune disease. I have been confirmed twice through biopsy to definitely have, without question, Wegeners, as well as a 2nd auto-immune disease, but I have never had a positive c-anca.

It's kind of like when my doctor told me I had to have a biopsy of my lymph notes to see if I had cancer. There were two options; surgery or needle sample. They could biopsy them with a needle to extract a small sample, but if it came back positive, then they would have to do surgery to take out the affected lymph nodes. However, it the result came back negative, then they would have to do surgery to make sure it was really negative. I didn't see any win-win of those two options, so told them to do a surgical biopsy and as luck would have it, they removed two nodes....

    My monthly labs are:
    - complete blood count
    - metabolic panel
    - sedimentation rate (ESR or WSR)
    - C-reactive protein
    - Urinalysis

I also have a lipid panel and a HBA1C done every 4-6 months.

I do not know what metabolic or lipid panel is, but I do the following:

    1. ALT (ALAT, alanine aminotransferase)
    2. AST (ASAT, aspartate aminotransferase)
    3. Albumin
    4. Total bilirubin
    5. GGT (gamma-GT, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase)
    6. Glucose
    7. Creatinine
    8. Total protein
    9. ALP (ALKP, alkaline phosphatase)
    10. CRP (C-reactive protein)
    11. ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate)
    12. CBC/FBC/FBE (complete blood count, full blood count/exam)
    13. Urine for:
    13.1 Leucocytes
    13.2 Erythrocytes
    13.3 Cylinders
    14. 24 hour urine for protein
    15. p-ANCA
    16. c-ANCA

The last 2 only once a 5 months or how your doc tell you.

Items #1-9 above are in the comprehensive metabolic panel. Lipid panel is for cholesterol.
