    Default Bad Chest

    Hi

I've had a dry cough, and breathlessness for about 4 weeks now - which comes and goes. I wondered if it was caused by allergies, or WG? I had severe lung problems in 1995, and it is a bit like that, but not as bad, so I don't know what to think.
Do any of you have similar symptoms? I had bloods done about 8 weeks ago, which were fine, so I am reluctant to go back to the doctor. x

I've got the same thing going on right now - since about 2 weeks ago. It's the middle of pollen season right now, and I have moderate to severe pollen allergies, so we're trying some different prescription nasal sprays to see if they alleviate the problems. If not, I'm afraid it's going to be my subglottal stenosis flaring up... I've only had surgery for that once, back in February, and the doctor said it could recur.... but I'm seriously hoping that it's just allergies.

Don't know if that helps any... it worked out that I already had a pulmonary appt scheduled for this week, so I was just able to ask them about it. On the good side, my lung function was vastly improved from 3 months ago when I was there last!!

If I were you I'd be going to the doc anyway. It might just end up being allergies but better to be safe than sorry!

I can't remember if you're on Imuran/cyclo or not but my doc tells me that due to me being on immunosuppressants (sp?) I won't feel the effects of a cold/flu as much as others. Usually the fever/aches etc are a result of the immune system fighting the infection. Because my immune system is compromised, when I have the flu, I'll have a cough and maybe a heavy chest but nothing else. Could be something like that for you? Just a theory.

    Hi Gwenllian
Unfortunately I think it is probably a symptom of WG. I have had breathlessness for about a year now and it has got to the point where I can really do nothing but sit around. I still go to work, lucky that I have a job where I mostly sit at a computer, and do stuff around the house but get very breathless and have to have rests all the time. I am having iv cyclophosphamide with methylprednisolone but unfortunately the treatment has not improved it so its just a waiting game to try and get back to normal. My specialist has put me on 3 months dose of prophylactic cotrimoxazole tablets which have helped the cough an flem etc. I hope you improve as I see in your photo you have a small child, must be very frustrating, I at least only have myself to consider.

Thanks for your replies. I do have hayfever usually, but so far I dont have the runny nose , or itchy eyes, so I don't know... I am seeing my docor tomorrow morning. My GP says my chest sounds 'clear' so, it's a bit confusing.
I'm not on any meds at the moment. I am allergic to cyclo (which I found out the hard way! liver failure, etc ), and I can't tolerate any other meds either, apart from Ritixumab and pred. I don't take prednisalone though, because of the side effects, which my consultant doesn't agree with, but then he doesn't have to take it.
I wondered if it was my stenosis moving down my airway or something, but who knows! It's weird, because my stridor is minimal at the moment.
Thanks for all the replies, it means a lot. Thanks

Hi Gwenllian. How did the doctor's visit go?

Not too bad. The doctor listened to my chest, and said that he had not heard it be so noisy before, and he admitted that I was very breathless. So he sent me to walk up several flights of stairs in the hospital, and then to come back to the day unit to have my sats done again - and my oxygen levels were normal - thus, he concluded, he didn't think my lungs were affected, but my tracheal stenosis. So, I wait to see my ENT surgeon on Monday, to see what he thinks. It doesn't explain (in my mind) why the top of my chest hurts so much, but there we go. Maybe the stenosis has grown further down my trachea, making me cough in a different way, i'm not sure?

    Prayers will be with you!!
I may be facing the same thing on Tuesday, depending on how well this new allergy medication seems to work. It's kinda scary, because my husband is at Army boot camp right now, and there's no way I want to go in for surgery again without him here!
