Default Chronic Scratchy Throat: A Symptom Of Wegs?

    Hi!

I've had a scratchy throat for at least ten months (which would get better and then return) and now it seems to have gotten worse. I also have a chronic sinus drip along with some coughing which occurs often with this scratchy throat. Is this scratchy throat a symptom of Wegs? Thanks!

I don't have sinus involvement so I can't answer on that but I can say that it's also similar to the symptons associated with allergies. I hope you get to the bottom of it and get better soon!

I have been a bit hoarse sounding since diagnosis (when I get excited I also get squeeky, husband thinks it's cute. me not so much)

It seems to be better some days than others.

For me the sinus drip and effect upon voice and causing some coughing at times is the main sign of residual GPA but no other serious symptoms so I am considered in drug induced remission. The residual sinus drip is one of the most commons things that lingers on even when GPA is consider fairly well controlled. Some times I take an over the counter med to thin the mucous which reduces these symptoms too.

I also have the scratchy throat and dry cough which persists until something is coughed up and then I'm OK. This is from my sinus involvement and post nasal drip. I've gotten from others on here that these things are pretty common with Wegs. But if it's unusual for you, you might get it checked out.

Throat sprays can help with the scratchy throat and coughing. One that some of us use is Entertainer's Throat Spray and may easily be found online. It contains mainly aloe vera and is soothing to the throat. I also use herbal throat sprays that contain propolis and other herbs. The propolis is made by bees in hives and has a healing effect on irritated tissues. Those sprays are from small herbal companies and can also be found online.

I also use guafenesin (Mucinex or generic) to thin mucus and reduce symptoms. I recently quit using it just to see what happens and there isn't a lot of difference, but I'd still recommend it for anyone with lots of mucus problems.

My voice has really gone through some weirdnesses since the onset of my Wegs, 2.5 years before diagnosis. That was when I thought it was all allergies and recurrent sinus infections. It was everything from very hoarse and gravelly and clearing my throat all the time, to a higher pitched squeaky voice that sounded like I wasn't getting enough air or something. Sometimes it sounded a lot like Kermit the Frog. I could only sound better by coughing just right or maybe inhaling some steam or using a throat spray. It was very annoying, and did come and go, and seemed to start improving as my allergy shots progressed. But after I got treatment for Wegs is when it really improved a lot. I've still got some hoarseness here and there, but mainly a fairly smooth, low pitched, and relaxed sounding voice, and no more Kermit the Frog! And I stopped the allergy shots when I was dx'ed with Wegs.

A chronic scratchy throat makes me think you have a food or environmental allergy.

    Hi Sangye,

I've been tested numerous times for allergies and the results were negative. I'm seeing my ent specialist on Oct. 11th and I am going to ask him what he attributes this symptom to.

Allergy testing is not that accurate and won't pick up on lower level sensitivities-- ie, a response that isn't a full-blown allergy. I suggest that you do a food elimination diet to look for the culprit(s). You can find them online. If you do that and still can't find the problem, then go through your housecleaning products, personal care products, etc....
