Default Looking into Saddle nose Surgey

Hi all, My last visit to E.N.T 3 weeks ago went well and have started the Ball rolling with looking into repairing my Saddle Nose . I Have been Well For a while now 18 -20 months .I have an Appointment on Friday With a Rhino Plasty Specialist to see if hes the right man to do it , or if a E.N.T doc should do it . Will let yous know what he / She says . I also See My Wegs Doc 3 days later. He Has never really Been Big on the Idea of getting My Nose Repaired only For fear of Triggering A big Flare , the risk is always there I know , will see what comes out of Friday . If it all gos ahead I will Feel very weird about a different nose /Face , I have had this Saddle Nose for so long
    Diagnosed March 2001 ... WG Involvement - Ears . Sinus ( saddle nose) , eye ( blind Left )
    currently on 5 mg Pred , Myfortex 6x360mg/d , Fosamax 70mg .

I can imagine that you would like to have your nose repaired. I'm very curious what your Wegs Doc will say...

How long have you been in remission? I was given guidelines of generally a year period before even minor surgery like cataract surgery. I think the big concerns were risk of causing a flare and/or getting an infection the body couldn't handle. And the possibility of an adverse reactions from all the meds I was taking for treatment. No one wants to do surgery on us people with broken immune systems unless it is important and medically necessary.

I had my saddle nose surgery on February 1 and all went well. I was reducing mtx before that for about six months, and had probably been in medically induced remission for about a solid year. My nose is not the same as what I had before WG, but they did do a great job and honestly you would never know. I had absolutely no problems with labs or clinical symptoms otherwise. I think that since we don't really know what causes a flare, a lot of docs are very cautious. As my rheumy says, "you can never make a surgeon operate."

That having been said, I am really glad that I had it done although I was very nervous before. I had it done by a plastic (not cosmetic) surgeon with my ENT in the room assisting. The material to rebuild the bridge was taken out of the rib and both healed fine, although you will notice that your nose is quite a bit harder than it was before.

Sometimes, when I look at my reflection quickly (like in a window of a store), I see the old nose. Weird the tricks the mind plays!

Please feel free to ask me any questions if you have them. Recovery is about a week or a little longer, and I found the pain to be very manageable. The operation is long - about four hours. My picture be on my doctor's website -- I signed the forms -- I'll be the only black woman there and my doc's name is Dr. Maurice Khosh. He's taken tons of pictures of me because it was a really good case. I can't bear to look because I don't want to think about how bad it really was...I'll just feel bad.

Hi Jan , Thanks for that reply , I'm glad It all went really well for you and you were quick to recover , I would of thought we would need more recovery time after the procedure. Well The Doc said on Friday that its really up to me and if my nose bothers me that much then we can look at doing it , his concerns were If The wegs Dog comes back and bites hard it will take the new cartilage and possibly more . That could be a very tramatic experience , but if i don't try i will never know .. , they took some clinical photos of my nose from various angles and will go back an see them in a month . now to see what Main doc has to say about it on Monday
