There is a thread on here somewhere that I think Sangye started about an anti-inflamatory diet and also Auyervedic ways. Check it out. And Dr. Andrew Weil also has some good things on his website about anti-inflamatory foods.

    Hi Maria,
I have been following the Paleo diet for nearly a year. Its helped with the sinuses and definitely helped me maintain my weight while on prednisone.
I have become very inventive with sweet potatoes. Also cauliflower mashed up works good as a rice substitute.......only food I miss is Pizza.....yummmmmm.

I think some big staples of "Anti-Inflamitory" Diets are whole grains and protien. Brown rice is recommended in place of white rice. I have found a couple books from Amazon.com that were really helpful for me. My doctor doesn't think it matters much, but I have found eating this way really helps how good I feel day to day.

Some good holiday gift ideas here hope this helps

Maria, I think it's great that your daughter is taking control of her health in this way. It indicates that she understands the way the disease works and is willing to do whatever it takes to improve her chances for a strong recovery. I give her a big "Atta girl!"

I suggest you make it easy for her to do this by changing some of your harmful dietary habits, like a lot of sugar, etc.... It takes tremendous willpower to improve one's diet. Help her out by not buying the junk food. If this were just a matter of a healthy child wanting to pursue a particular diet I'd say you shouldn't have to change your ways. But this is different.

I also think it's a great opportunity for you to transform your anxiety about Wegs into action. Instead of spending energy on worry, you can busy yourself with researching diets and new recipes, etc.... You'll feel empowered by doing it.

My Mom felt the same way you feel, Maria. And I started sending her articles and telling her about books I was reading, and she started doing her own research. I think it has helped her tremedously in understanding Wegs and accepting everything. It has also helped her and my Dad be healthier too. Knowlege is power! I also walk with my mom on my lunch breaks (we are lucky enough to work together) it is great bonding time and great exersice, and we can talk about different things we've read or heard. I think it all helped us talk about Wegs in a positive and healing light, rather than focusing on the other stuff

Well said, Nicole! Maria, I think this is all very good. I love the "take charge of your life" aspects. Inflammation is a complicated business. A good diet will help overall health, and, I think, useful to give the body a head start to the proper balances it needs, but it is important to note that it cannot replace medical treatment. They go hand-in-hand for weggies. Yet, I will say, on a personal basis, that meal planning with one's healing in mind can be a great joy--and joy is always therapeutic. Here are a couple of links to sites that I have found useful:

For information about specific foods, try Nutrition facts, calories in food, labels, nutritional information and analysis – NutritionData.com
For more general information about anti-inflammation diets, see Inflammation and Health

As I say, inflammation is complicated. If you are looking for supplements, please talk to a naturopath, or other holistic specialist. Products might be sold as "anti-inflammatory", but how they work (or don't work) in actual bodies is a different story.

But back to meal planning: There are many ways to prepare food, of course. I love to learn new recipes, but I tend to read them the same way a guitar player reads sheet music: to get a general idea of what the writer has in mind, but then figure my own way of getting there. Others like to follow the recipes more literally. In either case, the idea is to have fun, and eat well. I am pretty sure that your daughter would love this activity.

Elsewhere, you ask about yoga. I suggest, if you get Christina a yoga video, that you try it yourself--with or without your daughter. My own relaxing technique involves Qigong, which involves more breathing than yoga, but not as much pressure on my ancient joints. Both, though, are excellent for reducing anxieties--far better, I think, than a bunch of pills, and without the side effects!
