View Full Version : Our Embarrassing Moments

Having just thoroughly embarrassed myself today as a result of Wegs brain-fog, I thought it might be a nice idea to share some of our "moments" and transform them into humor.

My latest: I take 2 coumadin pills a day. Last night I noticed my bottle was almost empty. The bottle said it was filled on 3/9/10 and there were 100 pills. That should have lasted me 50 days. Because dates are completely scrambled in my brain, I thought today was April 3 and that they had given me far too few pills. I called the pharmacy and they said there was nothing they could do. I use this pharmacy for my many meds and they know I'm honest. I asked them to check it again and again, and to ask the pharmacist to give me the full amount. Thankfully, even though I feel really lousy today I didn't get angry.

They pointed out the date it was filled and today's date. Wow. I apologized over and over and over. I have to find humor in this or I'll be too embarrassed to ever step foot in there again.

That is too funny. Yes, I am in a brain fog every day. It's like I am a "air head", some people come to think I am. Oh well.

Would have replied sooner but forgot my password, went overlimit on attempts to log-in and had to wait 15 minutes. When I came back on could not find the thread.

Showed up at my blood check appointment at 10:00 today. The appointment is at 5:00. I said oh well not a wasted trip I have another appointment close by at 10:30. Went to the 10:30 appointment, it was last friday.
I do have a nice calandar in my purse too bad I never use it. Hope I remember to return at 5:00.

Lovely avatar, incidentally!

To the point, this very thing happened to me the day before yesterday. One other time this happened to me and I set up (accidentally) a second registration. This second registration, of course, uses a different form of my name and a slightly different password than my original account. I really need to get rid of that second registration!

Anyway, after trying all the combinations of name/password I could, I still couldn't get on. I asked for a new password, which came by e-mail. I tried getting on, screwed it up again, taking me to five misses. I came back a few minutes later (apparently NOT quite 15 minutes....), and set a new record for me of six consecutive fails.

"@%$!" I said outloud, truly upsetting my cat Louie, who never says such things. I sat out a day, resolving to end all association with the forum if I didn't get through. First time, using a name/password variation I HAD to have used (it's the most common variation combination I use on this and other non-secured websites), the forum opens up to me!

Julia, it was a weggie moment from hell! Not being able to get on in six miserable tries, I mean. Thought I better clarify.

Yeah, he just walked by, sat down, looked at me with his big kitty eyes and said, "@%$!...?" You have to be careful what you say around youngsters!

Yea, but Louie probably sounded cutier than you. :)

I remember the first time I said that particular word in front of the whole family....! I was a smart a college kid at the time, but my father quickly helped me to understand it wasn't acceptable or cute. Ha!

Y'all are very amusing. I'm new (my son has WG) and I was wondering if the "brain fog" is a side effect of medication? If so, which ones?

Thanks, Theresa we pride ouselves on being amusing. Prednisone can cause a "brain fog". What other meds is your son on? Welcome

Lightwarriori,
He is on Prednisone, Cytoxan, Lisinopril, Dapsone, Prednisone eye drops & Prevacid. His worst side effect so far is the tiredness and puffiness in his face and stomach. Those are minor to what many people have but the puffiness really bothers him. He hasn't said anything about being foggy but I'll watch for it.

There's no way to avoid the "moon face" that comes with pred. It also re-distributes body fat, so the abdomen gets big along with the arms, neck, chin, upper back and torso in general. I don't think fogginess hit me for several months, even though I was in horrific shape otherwise.

Other major side effects of pred are shakiness, excessive sweating, blurred vision and (oy!) mood changes.

I too get alot of brain fogginess. I would have missed my bone density test had I not cleaned my purse out the day before and went through everything. I also have a calendar in my purse which I live by for one week and then forget about it the next.

Sangye, again thanks for the info. I knew about the moon face but did not about it re-distributing your body fat. As weird as this sounds, I am kind glad you pointed that out because I have been getting pretty upset with myself, not understanding how the weight can get so out of hand everywhere.

If you want to see what pred does to fat distribution, look up Cushing's Syndrome images online. Like most of us on pred, my body isn't shaped at all like it was before. I carried my weight in my hips and thighs, and my torso, neck and arms were not fat at all. If I gained 60lbs before, I'd look totally different than I do now. An endocrine specialist told me that change is permanent--that even if I lose weight I'll still be shaped like an M&M peanut (my words). I haven't been able to lose the weight, so I have no idea if he's right. I really hate this shape, though--that I know. :(

No, it is not. When I was 14,15,16,17 years on high dose of prednisone...I had the moon face and belly fat. Then I went off it, belly fat and moon face off. Age 24 back on high dose of prednisone moon face, abdomen swelling fat all over. Then lost 20 pounds and all the fat was gone, that is when I was finally down to 5 mg of prednisone a day. I have been on prednisone for over 30 years on and off.
My theory is that every body is different and reacts to prednisone differently. So I don't believe everything a doctor tells me.

I was off pred for 2.5 yrs but my shape didn't change. Still, I'm not giving up until I'm stronger and able to exercise.

I am not giving up hope, either. I can't.

Went shopping for new clothes last Friday and saw myself in the triple mirror for the first time in 2 years. Oh, wait, did I mention that I was buying clothes 2 sizes larger?

I came home and burst into tears, sobbing for 15 minutes. I couldn't stop. It had been pent up inside since my last good cry (not too long ago, actually).

Lola i too have gone up two sizes my friends and hubby say what does it matter as long as your ok and what other people think i have got passed caring
ive always had weight issues but now not sure if it as been wg issues without knowing
when i had a period off preds a i lost my weight and went down a size but that was ok too
we laugh about it now as i have a set of clothes when not on preds and a larger version for when i am on them
clothes dont matter its whats inside them that does as long as you are as healthy as you can be thats what counts
keep your chin up :) Dee x

Lola, your weight will come off eventually. Remember this is temporary weight. Ditto to keeping your chin up.

Lola I went from size 10 to 18, in just a few months, i didn't recognize myself in the mirror. i honestly thought one day when I looked into a passing mirror - who is that old fat lady (realy no kidding) then I realized it must be me (I still could't believe it was me) I stared for a long time because it just wasn't me staring back, only looking at the eyes could I recognize myself. For a long time i wouldn't take any pictures, but finally relented and now the more pictures I take the better I feel about myself.

Thank you so much, Dee, Elephant and Jolanta. It means a lot to me that you've been there, too. My family is wonderful, as well; and you're right - my health is much more important than my looks.

Ive decided to fold up all my clothes and put them away for another day and only put the ones that fit me in the wardrobe. That way I wont get so depressed for the day when pull something out and it doesnt fit me. However this takes energy and motivation both of which I am short on at the moment. I find my mind wants to do everything but the body is not in sync. I have found that I think I can do heaps but when it comes to it I just cant. So I have to watch what I suggest to friends and family and my husband because I cant always follow through. Hard to accept that.

I do the same thing, Col! So hard to know what I can get done each day. I'm not even talking things that require physical strength. It can be overwhelming to deal with a small stack of paperwork.

Col I went one step further, last year in the fall i went thru my closet and gave all my small size clothes to a charity, and I mean all. i went thru the closet 3 times and each time I put away clothes. I also gave away all my heeled shoes. With my twisted anckle I will never be able to wear them again.

I knew I had a tidy sum coming back this year from the Federal and State taxes, yet it took me from the end of January (when I had all necessary documentation to file) till a bit less than two weeks before tax return due date (April 15th) to get motivated to take the paperwork to my certified public accountant so she could do the work of preparing and electronically filing my returns! That has to be something of a measure of how much inertia our WG can produce. Good luck, Col!

Since diagnosis in Feb ‘10 I have had to ask for 3 sets of new uniforms as weight has piled on as I’ve increased the pred. As it takes about 2-3 week to get the company logos put on, I have had to sheepishly pop my head around the door and ask for a couple of sizes up please each time they have arrived!!

I also have 1st hand experience at wearing a boob tube as my old t-shirts are rather a tight fit - not a pretty sight:)

Doug

A weight-related issue: Why is it the fatter a guy gets, the more apt his pants are to fall down? I speak from experience. The seats in my car are cloth that clings to my pants, so I have to re-establish them over my butt before I leave the relative privacy of having my butt hanging out behind my car door.... Walking, my pants want to go south. I hold them on the waist band. Belts make me feel "choked" and constricted, but walking with my hand holding my waistband makes me look a bit odd, to be sure. Suspenders are like a surrender into "Old Coot-hood" but I may have to, well, surrender.

Doug, that had me absolutely doubled over laughing. :D

Hammy-- took me a minute to get the "boob tube" ref. But yeah, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. :D

I can relate to that Doug.

I started wearing a belt a few years ago after I got the Pred Gut. Though for some reason I have lost about 10 or so pounds the last year or so.

[braces = suspenders], alright, Kimbangu! I don't know now. There was so much hilarity and attention brought about that maybe not wearing [braces = suspenders] is the answer: You always will have someone looking out for you, if only to catch you with your pants down!
