Itdracing hip pain can be from wegener's disease ( I had this myself) and it went away or Prednisone can cause necrosis to the hip area. Usually they do a MRI of the hip to see what is going on. Let your primary and Rheumatologist know Monday. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Wegs will cause joint pain, but not laxity in the joint.

Avascular necrosis of the femur head has particular symptoms-- sharp, localized pain for one. A sense of laxity in the joint is not usually present because in AVN there's nothing wrong with the ligaments. The problem is with the bone itself.

The most likely cause of hip popping and pain is pred. Pred causes ligaments to be more stretchy than normal. You might have noticed that all your joints pop and crack when you walk or move since going on pred. (I sound like I'm walking on twigs in the forest.) Because the ligaments don't hold the joint securely, you can easily sprain it with ordinary activity. The laxity caused by pred can also cause a painful hip or pelvis misalignment, easily corrected by a chiropractor. S/he can assess whether your hip is misaligned or if it's something that requires an MRI.

i now have Avascular Necrosis.. My Doc said it was from the Pred. They also took me off of methotrexate a few months ago. They said they didn't think it was doing any good. Now there putting me back on cytoxin she said for 6 months but i was only on it for 3 last time and they took me off cause it was too hard on me. but i go to the doc tomorrow for my hips and shoulder.. i hope they can so the surgery so i can get it over with!! It really sucks not bein able to walk or move without hurting really bad.

Summer, that's awful--I'm so sorry. I had classic signs/symptoms of AVN a couple years ago. We were absolutely sure I had it in both hips, but 2 sets of MRI's (spaced 4 months apart) were totally normal. It's taken 2 years to get my hips normal again. No idea what caused it, but they lost complete range of motion and had very sharp pain. They're at about 85% now.

I don't remember if you have a Wegs specialist involved. I would hope so, since it seems like they're grasping at straws right now. Why aren't they considering rtx instead of ctx? Especially since you already had problems with the ctx in the past.

Summer ditto to the same questions Sangye asked. I live in Greenville,SC area too. I drive to Cleveland Clinic and see Dr Carol Langford a WG specialist. I use to go to MUSC, but found that they didn't know any more than my local greenville Rhuematologist.

I agree with Sangye that you need to be absolutely sure of this diagnosis. Wegener's is a master of presenting itself as other conditions and you would need to be very unlucky to be suffering from serious steroid side effects so early.

Echoing what the others say - the standard for ctx that I see discussed is 3-6 months max, but rtx is quickly becoming a replacement for it (particularly if your insurance company just requires pre-cert and not that you have 'failed' on ctx). What does your doc mean when they say that mtx didn't work for you? What are your WG symptoms now?
