Sed rate refers to the "sedimination rate" which measures the distance red blood cells fall in a test tube of blood in one hour. It is used as a non-specific marker of inflammation throughout the body (not unlike C-Reactive Protein). Sed rates typically go down and go up more slowly that c-rp, however. Mine was 36 about six months ago, and is now 52, which my doc says doesn't mean a helluva lot. It's basically a sign that something "might" be wrong, and then more specific tests are ordered to find out what they are. Also, lots of drugs can effect the number, and it is subject to bad handling more so that other tests, because of the one hour time limit and how the sample has to be handled.

Thanks <blush>. I normally write about real estate and education, but frankly a good journalist can get up to speed pretty quickly on anything. And there's no more interesting subject than oneself!
