Hi Baron, Dee will be along sooner than later. I'm sure Dee is in Hull as she writes with a northern accent. (I'm also far enough away not to get a good slapping!)

If you want to hurry her up just mention Jelly Babies as she can't resist them:drool:

Jack

I really enjoy staying at Whitby. It was the town that inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula and the last time we went they had the Goth Festival so there were some very interesting sights!

http://www.yorkshire-coast.com/whitby-goth-weekend/whitby-goth-weekend-11.jpg

The local Disablement Action Group hire scooters for a reasonable charge which can be very helpful on the hilly streets.

DEE
08-30-2010, 05:11 AM
read recently that they dont know if they are going to carry on goth weekend as the local people dont give it enough support which would be a shame !
we usually stay at an hotel just near the bottom of the street were the steps go upto whitby abbey think about two hundred use to nearly kill me off before i dxt with wg probably take a few days now to get to the top :biggrin1:
first full day out with hubby spent at Robin Hoods Bay eating fresh crab on the beach:drool:
thanks for information about the scooter Jack as we intend to visit whitby sooner or later

I have a pile of JBs here without heads I can send you? I started a new way of eating them recently - bite all the heads off, then the feet and keep the bodies till last.

I blame it on the preds - other may feel that the blow to the head with the rolling pin my wife handles so well is responsible:crying:

elephant

That is very interesting how you eat them!

Fran
08-30-2010, 06:22 PM
mmmm think I'll pass on those jellybabies Hammy - can I have dolly mixtures instead ( the old fashioned sort) ?

Jack: That's really good info about the scooters - would have saved me puffing and blowing like a steam train because I wouldn't let my husband push me in wheelchair up those streets Thanks. Hope you have enjoyed the Belgium GP this weekend - eventful wasn't it !.

So is Robin Hood actually real as in the movies around King Richards and King Johns times during the Crusades?

Jack
09-01-2010, 08:20 PM
No, he's a mythological character promoted by the tourist and media industries, but not supported by historical fact. He was first mentioned in the 15th century, so there might be a fragment of truth in there somewhere.

pberggren1
09-01-2010, 08:30 PM
I still like the movies though. Isn't there a new one now with Russel Crowe?

Jack
09-01-2010, 08:32 PM
I don't really follow the movies, but I do enjoy going to the cinema occasionally.

It is on a steep hill so I've never been down to the sea - I don't think I would get back up again! I'll have to go sometime when I have the use of a scooter.

Jack Fran said i could meet her a cafe at the bottom of the hill next year without scooters !
maybe scooters would be cool
you could come and we coild have a weggie race down the hill:rolleyes1:

freakyschizogirl

i think we should have a weggie conference at the bottom of the hill. or party for the survivors if they come back up!

How many hours are you guys apart? Hills apart?

DEE
09-02-2010, 02:48 PM
i think about two or three but Jack might have a better idea !

Fran
09-02-2010, 06:19 PM
Well for me it's about 230 miles from where I am to Robin Hood's Bay which can take from 4-5 hours depending on traffic on small country roads. Now this race, I thought we were just meeting for a cuppa but I'm all for it lol - but it'll have to be an uphill race because when was it ever downhill for weggies - it's always UPHILL !!http://www.wegeners-granulomatosis.com/forum/images/editor/smilie.png (javascript://)http://www.wegeners-granulomatosis.com/forum/images/editor/smilie.png (javascript://)

Jack

About 4 hours to Robin Hood's Bay and about 2 1/2 hours to East Anglia.

It probably does not sound like much if you live in the US, but to us Brits it is quite a long way. :)

DEE
09-02-2010, 06:49 PM
hi Fran
that would be about right as i was working out to get to you or Jack and i know that it takes another two -two half hours to Whitby/ Robin Hood Bay from our house
we would have to find out if cafe sold muffin then Elephant could come:drool:

Jack
09-02-2010, 06:52 PM
You have to start being careful with Weggie meetings, if you get too many in one place they reach a critical mass and then who knows what! :w00t:

DEE

Morning Jack i knew you would know about the mileage

We'll order the muffins in and Elephant can fly in at Robin Hood's airport near Doncaster !! That always makes me laugh because I always think that must be the airport that Robin himself used - ha ha ( my stupid sense of humour ) but the more the merrier (there's pun there - Robin Hood and his merry men) Think I had better go and have a lie down and shut up ! http://www.wegeners-granulomatosis.com/forum/images/editor/smilie.png (javascript://)http://www.wegeners-granulomatosis.com/forum/images/editor/smilie.png (javascript://)http://www.wegeners-granulomatosis.com/forum/images/editor/smilie.png (javascript://)

I've only ever met one other Wegs patient and that was at an eye clinic. The Rhumatology department seemed to be full of people with diseases that I had never heard of. Uncommon diseases don't appear to be that uncommon after all and some of them are as nasty as Wegs!

DEE
09-02-2010, 11:14 PM
i very rarely see an other patients as wg usually see me out of clinic time usually the day before
he did tell me last time that the hospital have just employed a rhuemy dr who has wegners experiance and wants to reasearch on it
he also wants to do a wg clinic but its all down to the usual thing cash !!

just googled mapped distant from here and would take about 2 and half hours but that sounds ok to me. i would love to arrange meeting up with u all and if we can do it in summer the place looks lovely i have been to hull a few times but only to get on the ferry and i have only ever been to mablethorpe on that side of the country so it would be nice to see another part of the east coast. hopefully i can arrange dialysis at different times then i can go for an overnight stay. And it will be a few hours to myself. Dialysis has finally gone on four hours now but at the minute it seems to be knocking me out im not getting up till dinner the day after but it should settle down soon i hope. still i am feeling a lot brighter now but saw dr last week and told him i have been having rashes and nose bleeds so he arranged blood tests to see if wg is still active. take care lisa xxx

Is Robin Hoods Bay anywhere near the famous Sherwood Forest? Slightly embarrassing that I'm English and don't know but I've never been any further north than Cambridge!

You should all come to Bournemouth instead, it's not on a hill and is full of people racing around on mobility scooters.

Jack
09-03-2010, 04:08 AM
Robin Hood's Bay must be at least 100 miles from Sherwood Forest. ;)

Luce
09-03-2010, 04:10 AM
I know, I've just googled it! :blushing:

Well then, what connection is there to Robin Hood? Why is it his bay?

Jack
09-03-2010, 04:27 AM
Wikipedia says -

The origin of the name is uncertain, and it is doubtful if Robin Hood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Hood) was ever in the vicinity. An English ballad and legend tell a story of Robin Hood encountering French pirates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates) who came to pillage the fisherman's boats and the northeast coast. The pirates surrendered and Robin Hood returned the loot to the poor people in the village that is now called Robin Hood's Bay.

Hi Lisa glad to hear things are sorting out for you
you could come on the jolly to Robin Hood Bay thinking of early summer next year !! take care

pberggren1
09-03-2010, 11:18 AM
Either way I like the story of Robin Hood. Maybe he has some relatives still living in Sherwood Forest that I could visit.

Even here in North America 2 and 4 hour drives are still alot. But driving 1000 or even 5000 miles during a summer holiday is not uncommon. Our summer holiday in 2008 put 3600 miles on the car.
