I'm reading your post at 2:35 a.m. Does that give you a clue? For me the issue at this point is not pain but problems breathing through my nose. I'll wake up feeling like I'm suffocating, or wake up to find I've been breathing through my mouth for hours and have to drink a ton of water to rehydrate. I also think that prednisone and/or other meds interfere with sleep. I have a prescription sleep aid, as well as an anti anxiety med that should help, but overall they just make me groggy. If I'm going to be up in the middle of the night I'd just as soon be lucid so I can do a few things.

I don't know where you are in your journey with WG however most high dose meds, prednisone particularly will give your sleep cycles a great deal of difficulty. Keep on and sleep when you can, it will get better as the meds decrease.

I'm the same Tom.

My hip gives me a little grief during the night but the main reason I wake (and it's every hour) is because I can't breathe through my nose,
therefore, being a mouth breather I also have to drink a gallon of water because the mouth is so dry.

Well Alaska! I feel ya. I am not able to breath through my nose at all. WG had clapsed my nose. So I end up also breathing through my mouth which makes me contestanly drink and that leads to getting up to the bathroom half the night. I am kinda like you I have sleep and also anxiety meds. It doesn't help when you are in pain. But thx for the 2:30am post lol

If your sleep issues are related to pred, you may want to consider using 1-3 mg of melatonin about an hour before bedtime. You can get it OTC at most drugstores in 1 mg tablets. It's pretty cheap. As with all meds and supplements, discuss using this drug with your doctor.

Also, if you're physically able, a bit of regular exercise can be helpful in tiring you enough to get to sleep more easily. I think it helps the body produce endorphins that help you sleep.

I'm going to give the melatonin a try. I've been wary of supplements, except those recommended by my docs, but it seems there's no harm in trying this out.

Re: exercise - Once I got my energy back after being so sick for months and months, I really benefitted from a simple walking program, stretching, and light dumbbell workout. Helped in losing the prednisone weight and just generally reactivating my body.

One doctor told me to raise the head of my bed to help the GERD aggravated by pred and other meds. I think it is also helping me sleep better at night too.

I used to take melatonin as well.
Recently my little pillbox was empty, so I got me a new one.
Then I noticed they changed the text on the wrapping: it states that melatonin is not advised for people with an auto-immune-disorder!!!!
I have not talked this over with my Weg-specialist yet, but I am a bit hesitant to use the melatonin-tablets because of this product-advice.

Any thoughts on this?

Dr Villa Forte told me to keep dosage to 3 mg or less and not every day. No ill effects here.

I definitely have sleep issues regardless of being dead tired all the time! At night I take 50 mg of Trazadone (Rx) and two Tylenol and while it helps sometimes, it's not the magic cure I wish we had! Naps help during the day when I can turn my brain off. I keep the cell phone in another room, don't eat too close to bed time, and often read. These steps all help. But I'll be dozing off at 11:30 at night then roll over to turn the light off and I'm wide awake again, too. It sure can be frustrating! :rolleyes1:
