I had a throat dilation done 2 weeks ago and last night was having a VERY hard time breathing. After not sleeping much, and starting to become very scared, I called the throat specialist. He saw me immediately, did a throat scope and I ended up coughing up a TON of bloody crusts. YUCK! He said it was due to the cold weather and dryness. Now I have orders to sleep with a humidifier and carry a portable steam inhaler wherever I go. He said I was lucky he didn't have to put me out and do emergency surgery. Very Scary Morning:(

I bet it was scary. Glad he took you in and you didn't have to go to the ER. You will hopefully now have an uneventful recovery. Good Luck.

It seems like those throat dilations are causing alot of problems afterwards, look at what Phil went thru.
I am glad you were able to get in and see him right away and get things "cleared out". Hope you have no other problems from it now.

Yikes.........:scared: Where did these bloody crusts come from? What type of dilation did you have on your trachea? I have balloon dilations done on my bronchi every few months and that usually leaves me with a severe lung infection.

Hey Phil - I had the balloon dilation done (laser cuts and the balloon). I'm thinking the bloody crusts are from draining through my nose. I had 2 windows put in my sinuses for better drainage. Dr said that my throat is just very dry, causing these breathing problems. How did you know you were getting the lung infections?

I knew they were lung infections because my breathing got extremely bad along with fever, chills, achiness, worsening cough, etc....immediately after the dilations.

Just had another ER dilation done yesterday and they keep me overnight with a mask for humidity. I had so much crusting, I could not hardly breathe again. Pictures showed almost no opening!

Amann, do you rinse your nose during the day? I know that helps with my nose crusting and to get the crusts that from at the top of the mouth out.

I do rinse Phil. Twice, sometimes 3 times a day. I also have a saline spray with Mupirocin in it to help keep things moist. But apparently it's not enough!

That sure sucks the rinses don't help. I try humidifiers and it doesn't help me at all.

I seem to be coughing up more stuff this time. Which I'm assuming is a good thing. I did get a minor year during the dilation, so my throat is pretty sore and it's hard to swallow. Hoping I can go longer than 2 wks before having to do this again!

It seems every time I get Opened up thru surgery everything goes great for about a week and then it starts to feel like I'm closing down again. I know it can be a scary and frustrating feeling
