Does anyone know of Weg. specialist in the Des Moines Ia or Kansas City Mo area? I live in Hatfield Mo so it's equal driving distance to either city. I am presently seeing a Rheumatoligist in Des Moines but not sure how much experience they have with Wegener's.

Hi there, I don't get on the forum much but was lurking tonite and saw your post. I had the understanding that RA,s also dealt with other autoimmune diseases, not just arthritic diseases, which would cover Wegeners. You can come right out and ask about his experience. This is your life we are talking about here. My first pulmonary Dr Knew about Wegeners but never treated it or hada patient with it till I came along and felt that she will be more vigilant when she has another patient with a growth like I had on my lung and 2 months later I found out I had wegs from a total flare up. My RA told me that there is not a whole lot of Wegs Dx'd in the Cedar Rapids area but he was schooled on it where nurses and other medical personel had just heard about it in their college classes. I feel Im in very capable hands considering, I knew so little about the disease.

Hello New to the forum. Moved to West Central Iowa from St. Louis area in 2008. Was given one name in Des Moines at Mercy arthritis & osteoporosis Clinic in Urbandale. Have gone to him for 5+ years. Some ups and downs with condition, getting by.

I just put in Search Engine "Wegeners Doctors in Des Moines Iowa and Kansas City, MO" and it took me to lots of Wegeners doctors and medical facilities. Hope this helps if you have not already done this.

Thanks for the information. When I moved to Iowa called neurologists and rheumatologist offices, no one seemed to know anything about Wegener Finally had to call back to Mo. for a referral.I'm surprised that a Rheumatologist in Des Moines was unfamiliar with Wegeners. They are after all the ones that deal in auto-immune diseases such as ours. I actually found mine the year before I was dx'd I was referre to him because my rheumatoid factor numbers were up and I had swollen joints. Because of my past cancer history he needed to see the actual inflammation because he said that since I was still under an oncologist care. One year later I am dx'd and told that I would be refered to a RA. I told them that I had an open appointment with one from the year before and so I went to him. He just said, "See, if I had treated you for rheumatoid arthritis last year , I could have killed you! He said we could proceed from there and a plan was devised for me. I asked about the disease and told him that it seems not many nurses have heard of it and some said they mentioned it in college but didn't go into it because it was so rare. He also said that he has treated it before but not a in the area and there are not many cases of it in the Cedar Rapids area compared to like Chicogo and larger areas. But he did say that he is the one that would treat it because it is an auto immune disease.

I am currently seeing Dr. Swenson at that Clinic. I like his patient treatment and his knowledge even though i have children older than him.

If someone is still looking for a doctor in Des Moines area I recommend Dr Rettenmaier at the Mercy Arthritis center.

I seen him the first time back in 2000 when he diagnosed my Wegeners.
