Wg and SSI/SSD??????

I just got approved for SSD on the first try, and I think it has a lot to do with my age. I am 59 and working at a self employed business that doesn't make a lot of money, and WG has made it harder for me to work. If I was younger, they might think I had more ability to go out and get a job that makes more than what I make at my business. Or if I had been working steadily all along at a good paying job, and continued to do so after getting WG, they'd probably have denied me. I have been struggling and am grateful that they approved me, but think they should give more breaks to younger people with WG, too, if it is affecting their ability to work. I'm sorry it hasn't worked out for you, Nessa.

I got approved for SSDI right away. I applied when I was diagnosed. I was in such bad shape--extremely anemic, lungs hemorrhaging, legs and lungs filled with blood clots, on oxygen, etc.... I couldn't even stand for 2 mins. I went to the independent doctor exam, and he took one look at me and my doctor notes and said, "There's no way I can even test you. You'll fail everything. Let's just sit and you tell me what it's like to have Wegener's."

I was self-employed, too. Haven't been able to work in 5.5 years. SDDI isn't enough to live on, but I'm glad to have it at least.

Red, why were you denied SSDI due to age?

John was approved the first time. He actually had an approval within 2-3 weeks! I will tell you , he has an AMAZING doctor. I read online all of the information that was needed to prove some of the main things that qualify your for SSD. His doctor wrote ALL of these things in the opening letter. We hand delivered ALL of his records and results from test and procedures to the SSD meeting we had to attend. If you look at the "things that qualify" you for SSD Vasculitis is ONE of those illnesses!
How young are you? My husband is 36.
If you have an atty and you have been denied 3 times, I would suggest you find a new atty!

If you have an atty and you have been denied 3 times, I would suggest you find a new atty! It's true that vasculitis is on the "list of impairments" but that doesn't automatically qualify you. Severity of WG varies with the individual, so those with more severe illness are more likely to get SSD no matter what their age. Having the doctor write the right things helps! I don't even know what my doctors wrote. It would seem that since a lot of doctors don't know much about WG, someone without a specialist to write the report would be at a disadvantage. I myself do not have nearly as serious a case of WG as John or Sangye had when they got approved on the first try. I can still work to some extent, just not enough to make very much money. I have the age thing going for me, for sure.
