My daughter has just had MRI reveal bilateral temporalmandibukar disc dislocation without reduction. Surgery is being recommended. Does anyone know if tmj can be related to Wegeners and inflammation.

Seems likely that it could be related. In fact I believe it was so for me........ when my ear (eusthacian tube) was very badly inflamed from wg (completely closed for months), my jaw on that side was very stiff and painful. As the ear inflammation subsided (with wg treatment), the jaw eased up, without any recurrences. Are your daughters ears currently affected???

By the way.......personally, no way I'd sign up for jaw surgery if it could be avoided!

I am in dentistry in the US. Has anyone suggested less invasive treatment, such as an occlusal guard? Occlusal splint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occlusal_splint)

Surgery on the joint would be an option of last resort, with or without autoimmune disease. As the MRI showed no reduction of the disk, would it be possible to ask for other, less invasive options?

I agree with checking if it's Wegs involvement. When Wegs is active and giving me joint pain, it has sometimes affected my TMJ. (Severe pain that lasts a few minutes or hours and then suddenly vanishes) I also agree that I wouldn't touch that surgery with a 10-ft pole. TMJ surgery has an extremely poor success rate, often leaving the person with intractable pain and dysfunction. The suicide rate for people who've gone through it is quite high.

Get her checked out by a Wegs specialist first. If everything is okay there, I recommend that she see a chiropractor who uses spinal and craniosacral adjusting. They have the best track record at correcting the underlying problem.
