View Full Version : Question regarding sinus involvement

Up to this point I've shown no signs of sinus involvement other than occasional runniness and a bit of crusting. That said I was at the chiropractor today and I felt the familiar drip...but when I looked down it was a weird orange/red color. Not a normal nose bleed, but not just a runny nose. My mind of course decided to run to it was a new symptom, which would mean I'm not going into remission I'd think. So my question...has anyone seen anything like this? Could it just be the dry air maybe?

I do see my family doctor tomorrow so I'll have him take a look up that side of my nose to at least check if anything looks odd.

Have you had to irrigate your nose up to this point Bob? It could be just the dry air, but who knows. Irrigating certainly would not hurt.

I haven't had to, the previous visits to the CC ENT he said there were no signs of involvement in the nose so I haven't really paid much attention to it.

It is probably dry, just keep an eye out and make sure your not bleeding more.

I agree with Elephant and Phil. Time will tell if it's something you need to be concerned about.

Phil, love your new avatar!

Ya, I was actually able to get a new avatar. I think that is the summer of 06 or 07 when I was in remission and off meds. I wish I could feel as good as I did back then.

Thanks all. I've been stressing out lately....I honestly think the Prednisone is having a bad effect on my modes lately. Everything is bothering me more than it has for a while....I'll have the doctor check the nose since I'm there today anyway, but it sounds like I'm panicking needlessly :p

doc says the nose looks fine (just a bit red). So basically I was worrying about nothing. I need to kick back a little bit I think, my stress levels seem to be going up, which doesn't go well with my pred induced mood swings.

I'm glad everything looks okay, Bob. Do something fun if you can to let your mind relax a bit.

Well...just had a weird discharge tonight..felt it at the back of my sinus...felt odd so I spit it out. It was brownish green (Mostly brown) and was extremely weird looking. No odor at all, literally no smell not blood, not the typical odor of infection.

So I'm wondering if this is some sort of reaction to my second root canal, or if I have something going on in the sinus now. Sorry I know it's kind of a gross question, but I'm hoping this isn't sinus involvement after all and since it's a weekend there is no easy way to catch the doctor immediately I thought some with sinus involvement might let me know if I'm out in left field here.

How often are you doing the sinus rinse's? Sounds like old dried of blood mixed with buggers.

/looks guilty

Still not doing any sinus rinsing. My sinuses feel fine for the most part (other than the constant runny nose). There is some soreness on that side after that glop came out yesterday. Kind of like the sting of an area drying after it's been damp too long (I don't know if that even makes sense).

My first thought was old blood, but the color really didn't look like old blood, and it definitely didn't have the smell of blood. The fact that it had no smell at all it what stumped me. I figured blood or infection, but I'd think either one would have a pretty distinct odor.

Add in that I've had occasional pain in the bridge of my nose and I'm a little bit worried, though I think the pain isn't related, feels more like something snaped the cartilage a bit. Started after I rubbed my nose and it popped I should say.

I usually cough up a clear glob from the back of my throat, it is from my sinuses. However, if I have have coffee or something to eat, it will also be brown what I cough up.

Bob, I don't have sinus involvement but both Dr Seo and my Wegs ENT have told me to use a neti pot daily anyway. I don't technically have nasal involvement, but my cartilage has gotten softer and a little piece at the tip broke. It's extremely painful if I bump it-- must be on a nerve. It isn't progressing though so we're just leaving it alone.

Hi Bob.
Marta is very familiar with what you describe as she has experienced exactly that. She (and Hana our daughter) have been away for the past two weeks and they return home tomorrow (Hallelujah!!!). I will bring this post to her attention and I am sure she will respond with some info.

Hey Bob,

Sounds like the stuff I go through. My sinus involvement - on the first go around - didn't materialize until a day or two before I went to the hospital but it started with that odd feeling in the back of the throat/sinuses and then I spit up my first ball (literally a golfball size chunk) of blood or bloody something. After I got on the meds it was spitting up leech like things for a few months and then it went away. Since I had this flare, I've been experiencing more what you describe. Painful nose, brownish/yellowish/greenish discharge from both the nose and the back of the sinuses via the mouth. No smell (although I don't trust my olfactory senses anymore, which is a bummer because I love to cook and eat and now it's all a little dulled), but they're very strange indeed, the things that come out of my head. I don't know if they would treat things differently if you do have sinus involvement - just get the thing under control - it's just a bummer that you have to deal with it if that is indeed the case. It also gives me some nasty sinus headaches. I feel like I've been in the middle of a nasty sinus cold for months now. I hope that it all clears up for you pronto. It's not like you don't have enough on your plate to deal with.

But, if I may be the annoying optimist that I tend to be, it's not that bad, relatively speaking. I keep telling myself that sinus is sinus... it (WG) could materialize in so many more nasty debilitating ways. Ways that would keep me from walking or being myself, or being able to hang out and take care of my daughter, so having to blow my nose a hundred times a day and hork out some nasty stuff is not that bad in the big scheme of things, AND it will go away. It did the first time.

Take care of yourself and don't stress. I know that's easy to say from someone else's shoes, but your health is number one, and stress aint too good on it. You're already dealing with the situation. You'll have it licked in no time.

All the best brotha Bob.

Wow...that leech comment is EXACTLY what it looks like. My wife actually said it looked like snail slime :p I have a call in to my specialist, and am to go up the week after next if they don't feel it necessitates moving it up.

The dumb thing is I actually feel pretty good other than minor aches and pains so I was pretty happy with the progress, but if I'm developing new potential symptoms that tells me it's not as under control as I might like.

Regarding the neti pot, none of my doctors have mentioned anything about using one...which was why I hadn't. That's another thing to bring up.

Snail slime and Leeches is how i would describe what i have if i blow my nose and the lump as what usually comes away when my sinus feel painful and i feel stuffted up :rolleyes1: then it can be days before it happens again
i just take it as paer of me if you know what i mean

I have all sorts of weird ways to describe the weird things that happen since I became a Weggie. There's the leeches. There's the 'I'm inside a UFO' feeling when my ears are acting up. There's 'big hands' - a feeling I used to get mor when I first started cyclo and also this January when we upped the cyclo - my hands feel like they're two 10 pound bags of potatoes. They just feel huuuuuge. There's more, but this is boring.

I hope that things clear up for you Bob. I've had my sinus issues since end of October. Can't wait to feel like I don't have a stupid sinus cold. The neti pot cleans things out temporarilly for me, but I get stuffed up within a half an hour of rinsing, so it hasn't been that super great for me. Sure is entertaining for Hana to watch though. I also tried using steroid nose spray and that didn't do much. I found that Benydril in the evening not only helped with drying everything up but also gave me a nice sleep.

Best o'luck.

I'm going to keep an eye on it. I see the doctor the week after next so I'll likely ask her to take a close look at the nose then. Overall I feel so much better than I have in a while, that it seems weird to have to worry about this. Thanks for the concern though...I'll let you guys know if they do find it to be anything.

About a year ago I was describing some bizarre new symptoms to Dr Seo. He said, "I don't know what that is, but let's just observe it for now. You have many things that appear and disappear on their own, and we don't need to get too worried about them unless they persist." I've learned to view it that way now, too. Hopefully whatever your nose is doing will clear up on its own.

It is good advice. If I reported every new symptom I would be living my life in the doctor's surgery so most of it has to just run its course. There is of course a danger in this approach that an important symptom can go untreated for too long so you need to think long and hard about some of it and be prepared to take action if unsure. Waiting to see just how bad it will get is probably not a good policy.

Although this is my official line, I'm just as prone to denial as many others on here and do tend to leave things longer than I should. Or perhaps I'm just an optimist! :wink1:
Yes, that sounds better. :biggrin1:

It's so much easier for those of us who've had Wegs for awhile to figure out what we have to report right away. In my early days I reported everything because my body was going nuts, and also because everything turned out to be a major problem (eg uncountable numbers of leg and lung clots the first month). My early docs ignored me, which made me even more paranoid about watching every little symptom. I was the only one watching out for me. I've been treated by Dr Seo for more than 2 years now, and I'm just starting to relax and be willing to take a wait and see approach on new symptoms.

I think that's my issue...I'm a bit paranoid, everything's been pretty unstable for me health-wise the last couple years. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop :)

Hey Psyborg. It's easy to become a bit paranoid with this lousy disease, we all know. :wink1:
Hope your situation will become more stable, and you won't be getting new, odd symptoms.

I feel the same way, I feel like I am always scared or worried about something, especially every new little symptom that I get. I think I am so in tune to my body that I get scared with any new pain or whatever.

Sangye
02-08-2011, 03:19 AM
Ditto! It's very easy to become that way. Before Wegs I was in tune with my body and knew what to do with any imbalances I sensed, so I never felt helpless or lost. Now it's like I have a Martian's body and I'm trying to figure out how it works and what it needs. :rolleyes1:
