I would say that the med free people I met were typical patients -- middle aged, women and men, anywhere from 40-60, who had become med free anywhere from 1 to 3 years after diagnosis.
And while the researchers were saying that the oft-quoted, "50 percent of patients continue in remission after their symptoms are under control" is probably too optimistic (now most will say that most patients will flare at least once), there are people who go decades between flares without meds. One guy I met had been off for about 25 years (currently back on and actually having a bad time of it -- his issues were mainly of the ENT variety). One woman I met was dx maybe five years ago, had been off all meds for about two. I think she got into remission on mtx.
