    Default Inflamation, Prednisone and Alternatives

Have any of you ever wondered/tried to control any inflamation via supplements and food that help w/ inflamation and chucking the Pred? I'm sure it would be against the advice of any of our doctors, but I'm wondering if it might be possible.

I know because sangye has mentioned before that there are foods that can increase inflamation so I think it stands to reason that leaving them out of your diet would help with inflamation but you cant chuck the prednisone until you are in a form of remission.

If you go on this anti-inflammation diet, let us know how your doing.

There is a thread started by Sangye about Ayurvedic ways and diet. I think it is definitely something worth trying. Our western diet is totally crap. That is one of the main reasons we are not well as a society. We put garbage in and expect good results, but garbage in equals garbage out.

I'm not sure what food I'd have to eliminate. I think it would be hard to do, less you've got $$ to shop at health stores. My thought would be to ADD foods that HELP w/ inflammation. Would adding these foods counter the foods I shouldn't eat AND be enough of a substitute for Pred - I don't know.

David, I think most doctors are agnostic about anti-inflammatory diets and supplements. They may roll their eyes, but that's about it. Yes, most people, and not only those with Western diets, eat atrociously. We can do better, of course. But Wegener's is a complicated disease, and it takes a lot more to deal with it than just to eat better. (On the other hand, we can certainly make the situation worse by bad habits. For instance, too much sodium, and even too much potassium make the kidneys work harder.) Regardless of how much fish oil and apples we consume, those dreaded ANCA aren't going away without the nasty drugs.

    Hi David,
My joint pain which was like having a joint slammed in a car door, is now only a mild ache even with the pred now reduced to 5mg

I can no longer have anything citrus - really car door slammed food.
Lemons, oranges, limes, pineapple, soft drinks, fruit juices even bread and foods that are made or have an ingredient of citric acid.
and then there are peas - can't have those little green blighters anymore either.

It was a case of trial and error or trial and pain pain pain, but at least I know what does it for me and I avoid these things like the plague.

You need to do both-- increase anti-inflammatory foods and decrease pro-inflammatory foods. Google anti-inflammatory diet and you'll find the basics. No need to spend a lot of money.

I take fish oil supplements and had an interesting experience the other day. I had forgotten to take them for several days and was in a lot of pain-- joint pain and stiff all over. I took the capsules and within an hour much of the pain was gone. It actually felt like I'd taken a pain reliever.

Leigh is right-- don't even think of messing with your pred without a doctor's advice.

Sangye is right: You can eat better without spending a ton. And, no, this does not preclude the need for the annoying meds. For the record, I serve a relatively anti-inflammatory fare, with no added salt. I also supplement with fish pills. I haven't had any joint problems and generally have felt pretty good except for needing more sleep. For a while I was probably going overboard keeping potassium intake down, and cramping up a lot because of it.
