Default Is The Immunosuppressant Medication You Are Taking Preventing Further Hearing Loss?

    Hi Everyone!

Has the immunosuppressant medication your taking, prevented further sensorineural hearing loss?

I find this to be a very bothersome symptom and would appreciate it if you could tell me what medication you are currently taking. Thanks.

I take Myfortic, Pred 10mg and Bactrim plus a lot of other stuff and my hearing problems started about 10 years ago. I have problems due to blocked Eustation tubes and a bad case of Tinnitus which are slowly becoming worse. I can improve things by increasing my Pred intake, but this is not a realistic option. I have not suffered from any major Wegener's symptoms for over 20 years, but there are still underlying signs like this one.

This is a great question for someone seeing an ENT who specializes in Wegs. If anyone is going, please ask them!

I do know that Methotrexate is ototoxic. I think it depends on the type of hearing loss. With Wegs you can have all 3 types. But I would believe that if one was flaring and the Wegs was attacking the auditory nerve then it would make sense that the immunosuppressant would slow down and stop any further damage to the nerve. My ENT is not a Wegs specialist but I will ask him anyway and I will ask my Wegs doc as well.

I had almost complete hearing loss last spring before I was diagnosed. Once I got on the prednisone and cytoxan, most of my hearing came back. I do have some permanent nerve damage and tinnitus, but I don't think my hearing has worsened again while on meds.

Oh Gosh...my left ear feels like it needs a plunger...(Did I spell that right). Anyway, my left ear has diminished hearing loss of 25%...i tested for it. But since I look better on my right side it has not been a problem.

I saw my Wegs doc today and asked him about this.

He said that if the Wegs is causing the hearing loss then the immunosupressant will slow down and stop the hearing loss especially if it is neural (nerve damage from granulomas).
